para anglo ver // for an anglo to see

[EN] for an anglo to see. on breaking faggot & portuguese; on this depressed body-nation. on a country and a constraint and an alienation. & now? it's better.

note: the portuguese idiom "for an englishman to see" dates from 1830; it originally refers to the public perception of legal changes in a then portuguese-ruled Brazil so as to prevent slave trade. it was commonly understood that these laws had no real import, no pragmatic impact, and that they served no purpose but to respond to the political pressures of the significantly more powerful British empire. the expression survives to this day to refer to just that: a projection, with no real import, no pragmatic impact. here, the clever cluster of historical truth of that small, colloquial expression is taken to the (personal, lyrical) letter. the use of the gender-exclusive "englishman" is intentional.

for an anglo to see.

1. we could do it like this: you play guitar in a slow and hence vaguely significant manner while i compose a discourse of slow hatred towards this country - which is just a way of composing love & loss. does this sound good to you? you can: have a cigarette in your mouth and explore a variation of a boring latin ballad while i make a skeptical face which is the fact of an attempt at a conversation again. or, we can completely do away with the mediterranean-acoustic tone and admit that anything to explain me would be more in line with a slow r'n'b song with synthetized claps in which i found a rhytmic, unserious, light way of saying: i can no longer sleep on any bed at all because i do not have a community. the first time i type out community continuity comes out: it's not wrong.

2. now, i don't need to smoke cigarettes and to imagine the song you play as much as hear it and say: cannot stand the lacerated non-community of faggots who never come to be the, the one, community yet to come: cannot stand the lack of songs in the bodies of this land, cannot stand that this city does not know how to fuck itself. cannot stand the subtle (subtle?) transphobia that structures our weaving of a story of "ours" from the other side of the atlantic, not so much for an englishman to see as much as for us to see ourselves american, and not even those poor fools would be sure they want to see themselves as such, who could be? am sick: of needing you to be the kind of friend that understands that loving language is something which installs itself in the body and ruins and creates almost everything & of simultaneously needing you to be the kind of friend who knows how to dance with me to the sound of so-called. stupid. songs, this being one of the few things this some "gay community" learnt & one of the few valid things it saw, one of the few arts it understood.

3. a community which has learnt nothing real and complete, never quite cut up enough, on wanting and fucking and making, but which knows how to dance itself, which is big and a way of saying something real good too & an ethics. i say, i need to dance as much as i need to love language and i need both at the same time. this seems impossible to me in a country whose body is depressed - i mean, in a body-nation which has cracks, serious immense and grotesque grooves, which make it impossible for it to be agile (mentally) and good; impossible in a country with a broken tongue - i mean, in a body-nation which has no idea of what it is to love speaking & to love speaking itself. now, when i say body-nation i actually mean the territory i've arranged around here within its limits and through the however many select bodies with which i arrange it, but i have no other way of telling you the story, nor can i stop believing that these territories & these bodies are this country in a way which is quite its own and sufficient. the song? has vocal runs in a language we don't know (korean?); the song you play or make or sing for me, so that i may speak, has vocal acrobatics which give me humour, good humour, to know how to speak all of this.

4. love letter to portugal: i fucking hate you, it is impossible to live within you, all the lessons i carry in my body about the impossibility of a community and the impossibility of a language and the impossibility of the work of a tongue and also the impossibility of a body dancing (purely, beyond) - they're yours. am thinking: of transphobic faggots who do not want to be called "faggots" but who will be okay in allowing worse words to accrue to trans & am speaking of a country that does not know how to create itself in the moment it collapses, which is one of the few ways for a body to exist in this world - to make itself at its unmaking. right? am thinking: that i will not find work, way of saying that i will not find the work, way of saying i will not find text, the way my body and my speech go making one another in this or another territory. text & money, smile: this country - no, this territory - no, this community - has neither. everything that was creased along the edges of our story, we have unlearnt. we portuguese people & faggots are inept at knowing the closet and the body and the dance and at making an archive, the beginning of the weaving of an archive, even. we can now only exist in the conversation had with a transatlantic phantasm, which is a hard to place text/money. i have all possible conversations on the impossibility of living here it and yet it is still possible to live in the impossibility of living this. (though it is impossible to speak of this without your song around.)

5. am sitting in a living room (nice mats) with a couple of english friends who smoke a lot and that way i can remove my body from itself enough to speak the territory that made it. right now, am thinking: about voices which are not salazarist nor racist nor imperialist nor xenophobic, "but". am thinking: about my grandfather telling me about the hurt of not having me here, of seeing me having to go make my money/text elsewhere - you can guess which half he speaks of, and in which one my worth resides -, all because this country has gone ill, has always already been ill, and my body has to discover a flight, some diagonal elsewhere, right over there, and elsewhere again, all because the portuguese middle class has been bankrupt since birth. my grandfather's notion is that democracy in this country is meaningless because the people do not have power and that at least with salazar, dot dot dot. the subtext is, with salazar there is competence. values & principles. and all that means is that with salazar every body is installed in a secured place by fear and we existed, fortunately apparently?, before the race; pre-modern before the transatlantic conversation. the terms of this theater are: "competence" & "people".

6. now, i have no fucking clue how to begin formulating what a people is; but we can think of bodies and territories and the thing through which bodies make territories, namely the voice, which is how a bird draws its space in the world and knows how to be a bird and do its birding. this must somehow be my unsubtle attempt at the defense that we can still maintain our wet dreams of discovering a voice and a being-portuguese with anything even remotely close to the competence of a bird and its definitive capacity, so beautiful & well-defined, to be a bird. yes to know how to still have wet dreams in this territory would be a start. another slippage: i want to write wet dreams but i write wet bodies instead. i know, never no-one nothing body or voice will tell me welcome be your body and voice here, this territory is for you, is yours. what this means in a fundamental sense is that this territory is my territory which is that of not having a territory in so far as bodies, a people, do not have the basic competence to draw it, which happens by singing and fucking. at this point, the song you are playing (you who are so beautiful while playing this song with as many hands as you need) has already looped a few times. the english couple is patient in seeing me (they are, generally speaking, a patient body-nation). i feel like: saying that this is the most beautiful language that i know because it is the possibility of my body in history: somehow i have to believe this is worth something. no idea how to do that here, to know this body like this. i'll repeat grandfather's notion, or my notion of that ill notion: that with salazar there are values and principles because each body is installed in a secured place by fear. now every body is fragmented, in non-places & non-figures, by fear. no lesson other than fear and no position other than that of existing pre-historically.

7. if i speak of fucking again? it's as an instance and metaphor for "two" or more (please however many as possible), "two"-or-more bodies entering a conversation and coming to existence by tracing something in space, discovering a territory, which is a pleasure & a power. to speak of it as "fucking" is as important as speaking of it as dancing or singing and it all leads back to the same and essential; in some fundamental sense, this territory does not know how to fuck itself, and simultaneously, it has done nothing else in its recent story (baddam-tschh: you pause the song for seconds for comic/dramatic effect: the english couple laughs. they like this story and i'm in a good mood because i'm talking and smoking and drinking a lot, and this song is perfect because it's relaxed and superficially dissonant by being plastic and light when it hits exactly what i need to feel, which is in turn heavy & austere. but thank you for this,) thank you for helping me stage this. the english couple smokes and smiles. of course they smoke; they're friends of mine, and so are you. but i'm losing the thread. cleft: am against a failed community which i reject, that of faggot bodies who reject the usual bothersome bits, deflecting however many other bodies (femme, trans, black, whores's bodies,...) outwards & onto ugly so they may come to light, legitimate, and make their story in this territory by learning the viewpoints of a place other than this one: we are all american/masc/normal/post-modern. (the locus of ethics: the residue: to be portuguese/a femme/a freak/pre-modern.)

8. exactly the same place from which i speak when i review and reject it, the liminal space of a reflection in a mirror we don't recognize as such. way of speaking of in me the dream & fervour of the coming community as a lesson about so many other communities yet to make. less obscure: exhausted of the orthodoxy of homosexual cock and its bourgeois dreams of revolution somewhere in the designated areas of lisbon, a city which is ambivalent about fucking, dancing, speaking itself, being itself. replica of the ill leson learnt elsewhere, in all territories around us; the worst we could have extracted from the transatlantic conversation about ourselves, always illuminating us as special in the poorest parts of ourselves and obliterating the merry dismantlement, the awesome gap, which we could yet occupy, and the whole new lesson about desire that would ensue: what opens up in homossexual history. all of this ugly and hurtful would have had to be at least a new lesson on desire so that i do not give into despair. & this probably applies as much to the portuguese as it does to faggots, to portuguese faggots and to the portuguese as faggots, i mean: provincial boys who find out, stumbling, ways of being american instead of reviewing & rewriting the gap installed in their bodies so that they may understand the urgency of allowing something new to bloom in their territory and in the world, away from boredom and imperialism and the obvious. faggots, portuguese, etc.: fucking badly told story, from these foreign friends to my grandfather.

9. if the english couple smiles at this bit because i've found a way to make a spectacle of myself that makes me happy, but i admit that it's not easy for me to smile this to myself. i can smile if i hear the song and insist in what it provides which is wanting to tell the story still without ever quite knowing how to do so. one of the few things i can say despite & through hating being here, hating not having a community or continuity, hating the lack of history and of a story and of a territory, the lack of a design or a birdsong - one of the few things i can say in making myself in such bad terms here is that even when not finding that free and beautiful space, which would be to speak the community & to begin telling things from a different body, and to still be able to drink wine (stereotype: i'm mediterranean) and to dance (stereotype: i'm a faggot) to the sound of a good and small song such as the one you play for me... at least, at least i can remind myself that to go on writing is a way of bringing my body to a part of existence, writing being a conjuring act and manner of arranging the parts which i need in an uncomfortable whole by invoking the gap & from there to feel out some diagonal, a way of speaking-doing. a way of something gaining body and coming to light without being legible or legitimate, even.

10. imagining myself sitting with a british couple in england who are people who i would like to have listen to me while i listen to the song that i want you to play for us, for me, is just a way of writing this unlove letter to a country: hello & goodbye territory and home, portuguese body, fear, all of that: i hate you: you have made a writer of me & i love you: i write this letter to you.
